Aquaria says that she became a drag queen because she was initially a big fan of the show, and especially of Nina Flowers. Through the message of love and acceptance the brand has helped many LGBTQ+ consumers to come out of the closet, embrace their identity, and find their voice within the mainstream culture. The brand also disseminated educational messages about subcultures that have been traditionally stigmatized. For example, one of the contestants of season two, Sonique, came out as transgender, and she discussed that she was transitioning during the moment the show was filmed. A comment of a user on Reddit shows how her coming out helped Drag Race’s consumers to better understand transgenderism:

So proud of Sonique though and she’s so right. I’m an old b***h by this subs standards and I can remember totally not understanding what trans was at all. I saw nothing wrong when NPB and Shangie accused girls of being “trannies” and freely threw that word around myself. It’s amazing how far trans acceptance has come in this past decade. Also, Sonique is totally stunning and talented!
